The Biznik Manifesto

Biznik isn’t just a networking group. It’s a community. It’s a necessity. It’s a revolution. And if you’re going to start a revolution, you’d better have a manifesto. Here’s ours, chiseled from raw materials by Biznik word warrior Chris Haddad.

We Believe that Most Business Networking Groups Suck.
Actually, we don’t believe this. We know it. We’ve been there. We’ve suffered. We’ve gone to “lunch bunches.” We’ve had “power partners.” We’ve scanned the room full of dead-eyed real estate brokers, desperate financial planners and failure-focused “nontrepreneurs” and we’ve had enough.

Biznik doesn’t suck. Biznik will never suck. If Biznik starts to suck, tell us. We’ll either fix it or we’ll burn the damn thing to the ground and dance barefoot in the ashes.

We Believe in People Not Professions.
We don’t care what you do, we care who you are and how you do it. We’ve always got room for another massage therapist, another writer, another programmer, another marketing wonk, another sex star, another DJ, another, web designer, another songstress and another unidentifiable-ball of-potential-just-waiting-for-the-chance-to-take-the-business-world-by-storm.
We’ll never turn anyone away because “we’ve already filled your spot.” If you’ve got the passion and the drive, we want you.

We Believe in Collaboration, Not Competition.
Competition is an old myth made up by old men with old ideas and no imagination. There’s work out there–big gobs of it–plenty to make all of us fat and happy and (if we eat too much) probably a little tired.

Bizniks work together. Bizniks form teams. Bizniks will stage a completely collaborative, non-violent coup of the greater business world.

We Believe in Community.
Business is a social game. Let’s play together. Biznik isn’t something you go to, show up for, log into or whisper about. Biznik is something you are. Becoming a Biznik is just like joining a family. But without the death benefits, crying bouts and awkward and uncomfortable family dinners.

We Believe that Money is a Good Thing.
Say it with us. Take a deep breath. We know it’s hard. “Money is a good thing.” Money in the right hands is powerful, passionate and cool. We want to make money. We want you to make money. We just want to do it on our terms.

We Believe that High Monthly Dues, Long Term Contracts and Punishment Fees are Bullshit.
(We also believe in swearing to make a point.) Biznik is free. Being a Biznik will always be free. Will we ask you for money someday? Definitely. But not much. And paying will just get you some small bonus, it won’t make you king of the Biznik mountain. We won’t lie, Biznik needs to make cash in order to survive, but we’ll never treat our members like cash machines.

We Believe in Relationships, not Referrals.
We don’t care if you never once refer to another Biznik. Do we hope you will? Sure. But we’ll take a hard-working, passionate professional over a hackneyed-unethical-referral-throwing-ladder-climber any day of the week. Be a Biznik. Build relationships. And if you’ve got business to give, go for it.

We Believe in Participation.
Being a Biznik means showing up and pitching in. You can’t buy your way to Biznik supremacy, but you can contribute your way there. Show up. Teach a seminar. Post on the boards. Host an event. Take us all to Disney Land (OK, not that last one. Unless you really want to. We all love Space Mountain, and the Haunted Mansion around Christmas time is just cool.)

We Believe in Technology.
Yes, yes, we’ve seen Terminator. Yes, we know that artificial intelligence is going to enslave all of mankind and thrust our planet into a dark age of warfare. But we still love technology. And we still think that taking advantage of cool web tech combined with fun f2f events is the best way in the world to get the buzz about your business out there. If you aren’t tech savvy, don’t worry, we’ll teach you. But you do have to be willing to learn.

We Believe in Self-Interested Altruism
Give to the group without expecting any return. Karma will come and get you. Karma will hunt you down.

We Believe in Events, Not Chapters
Whether you’re in Seattle or Swaziland, we’re all part of the same big Biznik. We don’t have chapters. And we’re not just some web community. Events are the lifeblood of this crazy body and the more of them you go to the more you’ll get out of  the group.

We Believe in Being Progressive
And that you’re smart enough to define what that means for yourself. Bizniks work toward positive change. This isn’t politics, it’s attitude. We’re trying to make the world a better place. We hope you are too.

We Believe that Running Your Own Business is Freaking Hard. And that Biznik Can Make it Easier.
If you believe in these things too, then come and join us. If not, well, why are you still here? Isn’t there anything good on the TV?

Chris, Dan, Lara, and whoever else contributed words, ideas, inspiration, and truth to this manifesto — well said! I’m proud to be a Biznik!

  2. Elke Macartney Says:

    Oh my.
I haven’t been thusly moved by a manifesto since I read the 1972 BITCH manifesto (Yeesh, that’s dating me!)
Wow. The Biznik Manifesto: good, powerful words; a tall order; a stand among stands.
I can stand with that, because I have sat through the other networking meetings, and yawned my way through pyramid schemes and rah-rah groups. Biznik is not a rah-rah group. It is an AHA! group.
We get to discover what works.
I will do everything in my considerable power to absolutely not let this ‘place’ suck!

  3. Leila Anasazi Says:

    Nicely stated.
This will be a great tool for helping me explain Biznik.
And now, off to recruit additional Bizniks.

  4. Christopher Braxtan Says:

Nice Work! Well Said! Especially the bit about self-interested altruism. Each individual benefits when they make their world, their nation, their society, their subculture, their scene or their networking group better. And collaboration just works better.

    Onward and Upward!

  5. David Amann Says:

    Hi,

This is great work! I’ll email it around!

    David

  6. Peter Fosso Says:

Fantastic. Well said! And maybe we should add ‘abundance over scarcity’. Success is everywhere, when you’re open to it. I’m proud to be a member and a guiding force for Biznik. Thank you for bringing Biznik into the world!

  7. Scot Duke Says:

    Dan,

Here ya Loud and Clear… Good job letting all know what to expect. Great group you are growing and there are a lot of anti-networking group business people keeping an eye on what you are doing. Keep it up!

  8. Ingenuity » Biznik Says:

[...] Biznik is “a business networking group that doesn’t suck.” Here is a sampling from their manifesto (manifestos make me happy): We Believe in Collaboration, Not Competition. Competition is an old myth made up by old men with old ideas and no imagination. There’s work out there–big gobs of it–plenty to make all of us fat and happy and (if we eat too much) probably a little tired. [...]

  9. Danny Bronski Says:

Wow…this is very well written and thought out. I am impressed, and my oft-cynical self totally buys in.

  10. Dennis Dilday Says:

In a time and place where the majority of relationships are solidly founded on what I call the Three Ss (selfish, shallow, and superficial), this offers something else. What a cool group. And what a cool thing to stand for.

  12. Joe McCarthy Says:

I like everything in this manifesto, except the opening. Is it important to start off by dissing other business networking groups? Why not lead off with the positive? Everything else in this whole document is positive and affirming. The opening section just seems dissonant to me, especially given some of the other principles (e.g., emphasizing collaboration over competition).

On a separate, but related note: anyone [else] who is inspired by this manifestomight also be inspired by Doug Rushkoff’s latest book, Get Back in the Box: Creativity from the Inside Out.

Finally: it might be nice to establish a special link to this page, e.g., http://www.biznik.com/manifesto.

  13. Administrator Says:

We’ve been thinking about that exact thing, too, and have decided to drop that opening for pretty much the reasons you outline here.
