My Bias Is Showing

Yea, I know, Indie Business people come from all walks of life. I’m sure we’ve got a few social conservatives on here (How they got here, I have no idea) and even more financial conservative (um, actually, I think I fit that bill.)

But am I the only Biznik dancing madly at the idea that the Dems took both the house and the Senate?

I mean WOWZA!! Wowza, I say!!

Man, I hope we never have “Who gets to write the Biznik blog” elections. I couldn’t handle the stress.

Right there with you, Chris. Couldn’t have put it better myself. Guess that’s why they pay you the big bucks.

YEAH! WOWSA! I couldn’t have handled another 2004 (I was in the fetal position for about a week after that smackdown).

I can even manage to feel slightly magnanimous toward any Bizniks who may be feeling distressed at the outcome, knowing how absolutely devasting it feels to be on the receiving end.

And hey, if there are any fiscal conservatives in the bunch, they should also be rejoicing. Republicans? Fiscal responsibility? Oxymoron, anyone?

    Ahem.

While it’s good fun to take swipes at the most recent crop of sillies, looking in the long term suggests that every slice of the political class gets in trouble when any one party controls the executive and legislative branches at the same time. Also, when any one party holds on to one branch for a long time. God (or bog) help them and us when they think they have a “mandate” – for all choices of “them.”

I suspect that the complexities, pressures and temptations of trying to surf something as huge and unwieldy as “the US” make it impossible for even the most talented and well-intentioned to stay engaged without the help of an effective loyal opposition. An effective opposition keeps them less dishonest, and more sane(-ish). Doubly so for the intellectually challenged and / or venal.

FWIW, for the Biznik demographic, I suspect that neither of the two major parties in the US is a comfortable fit. Indeed, there’s a demographic still looking for a home: educated, technologically literate, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, skeptical of government’s effectiveness both in internal programs and external ambitions, globally aware, and cosmopolitan while not “multicultural” to the extent that “anything goes.” On that last I’m referring to people who are likely all for “gay marriage” while vigorously protesting the current genocide in Darfur, while wondering what more to do. They tend to be both affluent and active for causes if not for parties.

Maybe, eventually, one of the existing parties will figure it out. To date, neither has, really. Or we could start our own.

Fiscally conservative…ahhh… is that a bad idea?

I don’t think so, if I was not fiscally conservative I would not be in business. Us small businesses have to be fiscally conservative, otherwise we are quickly out of business.

Now, I’m not talking being stingy, or not spending money where money is well spent. I’m talking abouty convserving money, the same way I’d conserve electricity, water, or other resources. IE: use ‘em, but use ‘em wisely.

Yeah, it’s pretty ironic that the Republican’s are supposedly “conservative.” They certainly aren’t conservative by any stretch when it comes to spending government money, were they? I’m glad to see the Democrats in control of both houses, but not particularly optimistic about what they can accomplish, at least in the short term. I think this vote was more against Republicans than it was for Democrats.

has anyone considered the possibility that our entire political system is broken? We have a two party system..year by year it looks more and more like a two party scam on the one party that matters: the people!

sure, they differ on a few social issues..but neither party has any trouble voting themselves raises even during economic downturns..adding to their benefits and perks package at every turn..as if they didn’t already make out during the campaign..hard money, soft money, money, money, money..no wonder they have no problem spending it on even the most hairbrained schemes…inventing wars left and right(no pun intended) as an excuse to spend..i mean, it almost seems like you gotta be a millionaire to begin with to get elected to many state and most national seats..(and if your weren’t before you got in, you damn sure are when you leave!) it is no wonder they all spend/waste money like water…they don’t have to work for it(and of course pay very low taxes in proportion to their compensation)..

ok..so i’ve ranted about those patrician aristocratic assholes enough..back to my orignal rant..in my opinion the two party system
sucks! i like European style Parliaments which share power and govern with idealogically diverse coalitions.. that makes it really hard for one party to hold all the cards, and it gives their voters choice.

now, i’m curious…who here has heard of the Libertarian party?
my experience is that they are big on freedom(majorly love the constituion!), believe in a smaller more efficient government that conducts necessary spending wisely. they are very small business friendly as it’s composition is strongly represented by small business owners like you and i. be happy to look up the party meeting dates for anyone interested…
