New business terms for 2007

Here’s a list of new business terms for 2007, culled from a list of new words forwarded to me by my friend Jack Lowry. Doesn’t this make you glad to be indie?

BLAMESTORMING.

Sitting round in a group, discussing why a deadline was missed or a project failed, and who was responsible.

SEAGULL MANAGER.

A manager who flies in, makes a lot of noise, craps on everything, and then leaves.

ASSMOSIS.

The process by which people seem to absorb success and advancement by sucking up to the boss rather than working hard.

SALMON DAY.

The experience of spending an entire day swimming upstream only to get screwed and die.

CUBE FARM.

An office filled with cubicles.

PRAIRIE DOGGING.

When someone yells or drops something loudly in a cube farm, and people’s heads pop up over the walls to see what’s going on. (This also applies to applause for a promotion because there may be cake.)

SITCOMs.

Single Income, Two Children, Oppressive Mortgage. What yuppies turn into when they have children and one of them stops working to stay home with the kids or start a “home business”.

ADMINISPHERE.

The rarefied organisational layers beginning just above the rank and file. Decisions that fall from the “adminisphere” are often profoundly inappropriate or irrelevant to the problems they were designed to solve. This is often affiliated with the dreaded “administrivia” – needless paperwork and processes.

404.

Someone who’s clueless. From the World Wide Web error message “404 Not Found” meaning that the requested document could not be located.

    Wow. Makes me cringe. Truly.

And what about the other side of the coin, when indie goes bad:

    INDIEBRIATED.

The state of being drunk on freedom, to the extent that the former wage slave loses all good judgment and stumbles from one blunder to another. Often results in astronomical debt and the flight back into the waiting clutches of the corporation. My vision of Biznik is that it gets ever better at helping indies stay sober and free.

Anyone have any other suggestions for Indie vocab?

  2. Nancy Hanauer Says:

I ‘think’ I thought this one up the other day…even Googled it to see if it was being used yet and saw no references of it online…

ALTREPRENEUR…a small business owner who caters to alternative lifestyles or practices (Like Sierra Faye and several other “Alt Crew” Bizniks!)

Good stuff Dan. Laughing til i cry about the SITCOM one. Too close to home.
